“Uplifting Tomorrow’s Leaders” is the theme of the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund’s mural, which may be seen whereas driving on the Kennedy Expressway.
The mural, evocative of the fund’s mission to assist carry up the leaders of tomorrow with elevated entry to academic alternatives, was created by artist Karen Spears.
“This was my first massive scale artwork piece,” she explains.
Spears acquired a scholarship from this system in 2009, which enabled her to attend Mom McAuley Excessive College.

DMSF commissioned Spears to design the mural, which tells the story of how the non-profit helps younger individuals obtain their desires.
Cindy Hallums, DMSF’s govt director, has recognized Spears since she was 13 years outdated.
“Watching Karen develop, it’s truly what we hope all of our students grow to be: profitable, impartial, residing out their very own desires,” she mentioned.
In 1989, Jim and Bob Murphy began the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund in honor of their father. They supported 4 students that yr.
This yr they’re supporting 500 students with tuition help and different applications and companies, like their Caddy Program, which Jessica Ayala participated in.
She can also be a 2009 Daniel Murphy Alum who attended Loyola Academy in Wilmette.
“I labored actually arduous in the summertime Caddy Program and the fruits of that labor awarded me a full time free tuition and housing scholarship to Marquette College,” she says.
She now works at DMSF as their advertising and communications supervisor, and helped handle the mural venture.
