Bertha Ellen “Ella” Brown was born close to Grizzly, Oregon on Feb. 14, 1881. Her mother and father have been Samson and Bette Brown, who have been among the many earliest settlers close to Grizzly. There have been 14 youngsters within the household. She left residence when she was very younger as there have been some home points at her residence. She walked from Grizzly to the Edward Bolter ranch on Trout Creek, the place she acquired a job. She met John Bolter whereas working on the ranch.

Bertha, generally generally known as “Ella,” and John Bolter quickly grew to become enamored with one another. When she was 16 years previous, they have been married on Dec. 1, 1897, on the Edward Bolter ranch. John was born on Sept. 11, 1876, in The Dalles, and his mother and father have been Edward and Matilda Bolter.

John had established a homestead close to his mother and father at Cross Keys, and after their marriage, they ran a cattle ranch and maintained a stage station generally known as Cross Keys Station. They operated the stage station till the railroads got here to Central Oregon in 1912. Ella loved assembly many attention-grabbing individuals whereas sustaining the stage station and ranch. Each Ella and John managed the cattle herd. Ella did a lot of the cooking on the station and was saved busy with typical home chores, in addition to ranch chores.

That they had 4 youngsters, two sons and two daughters, with a son passing away as an toddler. Ella and John remained on the ranch for the remainder of their lives. Their residence was situated in three totally different counties by the years, first in Wasco County, then Criminal County and eventually in Jefferson County. Oddly, by the years, they obtained their mail at seven totally different publish places of work, though they by no means moved. They celebrated their sixty fifth marriage ceremony anniversary in December 1962. Each Ella and John have been lively in public and group affairs.

John handed away on Could 1, 1963. Ella lived on for a number of years and handed away on Aug. 7, 1971. They’re each buried in Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park, in Madras, Oregon.
